12th Annual Norcal Tip-Off Classic (Preview) Ft. Top Norcal & Socal Teams

The Norcal Tip-off hosted by Gerry Frietas each year signals the start of a new high school basketball season. Each year the top Norcal teams meet up at Newark Memorial High School for a fun full day of competitive basketball with two Norcal vs Socal matchups to end the night.

Game 1: 9:30 AM Sacred Heart (San Francisco) vs Stuart Hall (San Francisco)

SHC lost a lot coming into the season with graduating seniors and transfers of Bryce Monroe and EJ Neal. Stuart Hall returns practically the same team that made it to the Div IV state championship last season. SHC doe has a few transfers coming in. Look for 2019 Miles Amos and 2021 Nigel Burris to be top performers of this game.

Game 2: 11:00 AM James Logan (Union City) vs Campolindo (Moraga)

James Logan will be lead by transfer Brett Thompson, Brah’jon Thompson, Michael Steadman, and Gabe Hawkins. Campolindo will be lead by Carter Mahaney and David Ahazie. 6’2 Aiden Mahaney is known as one of the best freshmen in the nation let’s see if he will make an impact on varsity right away.

Game 3: 12:30 PM Dublin vs. Riordan (San Francisco)

One of the most exciting matchups between two normal teams. The game features Robby Beasley, Bryce Monroe, Je’lani Clark, and Jaden Saunders. There will also be a nice matchup down low with Rinny 6’9 and Chan 6’8 who came from Sudan last season for the Crusaders vs Dublin’s Anthony Roy 6’4 & Skylar Robinson 6’7. Unfortunately, Bryce has not been cleared to play and Robby is maybe out due to a foot injury.

Game 4: 2:15 PM Newark Memorial (Newark) vs St. Patrick-St. Vincent (Vallejo)

Newark loses two seniors that were MVAL all-league last season. Expect senior Endico Coleman to step up and take on the leadership role for the Cougars. SPSV will be led by quick and athletic point guard Akil Edwards and top 2020 big man Dishon Jackson who is getting Pac 12 interest. SPSV did lose some firepower as Chance Mcmillan transferred over to Jesse Bethel.

Game 5: 3:45 PM Moreau Catholic (Hayward) vs. Capital Christian (Sacramento)

Moreau Catholic brings back their core from last year and looks to be a favorite in the Mission Valley League. Capital Christian took a big hit this week losing one of the top players in norcal Kendall Munson moving back to Washington. Notable Players for Moreau: Leonard Turner, Max Anderson, Amil Fields, Glenn Bryd. Capital Christian: Preston Hall, Caden Flowers, and Evan Johnson.

Game 6: 5:30 PM Bishop O’Dowd (Oakland) vs. Grant (Sacramento)

Bishop O’Dowd lost one of the best backcourts in BOD history in Elijah Hardy (University of Washington) and Naseem Gaskin (University of Utah). They also lost D1 prospect 6’9 Ray Hawkins who transferred to Findlay Prep. Grant returns practically their whole roster who made a deep DIII state run last season. Look for (Cal Poly- Pomona) commit Will Chavarin & Iniko Mcniel to lead the charge for the Dragons and key contributions from Brendan Patrick and Monty Bowser. The core for Grant will be Steven Richardson, DJ Pruitt, David Jones, Aj McGee, and Corey Yerger.

Game 7: 7:00 PM Sheldon (Sacramento) vs. St. Bernard (Playa Del Rey)

#1 team in Norcal looks to be even strong than last year with the addition of Marcus Bagley & Josh Morgan. Josh will be battling in the paint with future Long Beach St teammate Romel Mansel. Other key players to look out for is Mook Harris and Nick Bowden. Key players for Sheldon will be CSU East Bay commit Kaito Williams, Xavion Brown, Justin Nguyen, and Marquis Hargrove.

Game 8: 8:30 PM Modesto Christian vs. Santa Margarita (Rancho Santa Margarita)

The finale will be a heavyweight matchup that includes a lot of size and D1 talent. Modesto Chrisitan will be led by UC Davis commit Aaron Murphy, Erv Knox, and Dathan Satchell. Santa Margarita will be led by Max Agbonkpolo (USC), Jake Kyman (UCLA), and Shengzhi Li (BYU).
